Meet The Coworking Manager: Aya Komori of Servcorp Shinagawa
After living in the U.S. as a child and later moving to Hong Kong, Community Manager Aya Komori brought her international worldview to the coworking community at Servcorp. Now, Aya oversees one of Servcorp’s largest locations — the Shinagawa Intercity Tower — and supervises two other locations in Tokyo. Learn more about her story and the advantages of working from Servcorp below!
How did you discover coworking?
At the time I joined Servcorp in 2006, we did not have coworking spaces so I first discovered it when we opened our first coworking location in the Marunouchi Yusen Building in Tokyo back in 2014.
Which space do you currently manage? How long have you been the community manager there?
I manage Servcorp’s coworking space in Shinagawa, and I supervise our locations in Nagoya as well. I have been a space manager in several locations and moved to Shinagawa — one of our largest locations — in August 2018.
How would you describe the community at Servcorp Shinagawa?
Servcorp’s Shinagawa location is one of the biggest coworking spaces in Japan. We occupy the entire 28th floor of the Shinagawa Intercity Tower A and also provide private office spaces and virtual office memberships. We have 11, four-seater booths, 12 coworking lounges, and 12 dedicated desks in our coworking space.
Plus, as soon as you exit the elevator and walk into the reception, you will be greeted by our bilingual team with a remarkable view of Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, Sky Tree, and Hanada Airport!
What other unique elements make your coworking space stand out from all the rest??
Shinagawa station is the most convenient location from airports and bullet trains (Shinkansen) to east Japan. Also, Shinagawa is one of the most highly accessible areas with more than 15 different train lines.
One of the main reasons our clients become members at our space in Shinagawa is this unparalleled convenience from all over the world and from other areas in Japan. Also, this convenience creates more opportunities to connect with global and local companies.
Do you host any events to bring the community together?
We host a free, casual community event every month. I could not imagine how clients would approach this event when we first started, but now I feel it is a great opportunity for clients with different types of memberships to make new connections. Sometimes, I see our coworking or virtual office clients visiting our private office clients to discuss new business opportunities after they’ve met at these monthly events.
In addition, one of our most successful events was collaborating with a client who has confectionery stores in Shinagawa and recently opened in a big, brand new building in Shibuya. They promoted their products at our space with a free tasting event, which amassed the biggest crowd we’ve had at any of our community events so far in Shinagawa.
What are the three key ingredients for operating a successful coworking space?
- Creating a blend of a casual and professional business environment. It should not be too casual — it’s key to also keep things professional for members running a successful business.
- Hosting events on a regular basis for networking and to involve your team as well. Your team can then get to know and better assist the space’s clients in a way that complements their business requirements.
- Choosing a location that’s easily accessible and offers a convenient commute for members.
What is your favorite part of coworking?
Assisting our clients with finding their next business opportunities. It makes me happy when I see different clients collaborating and taking on new challenges together.
Do you have any advice or tips for someone who is looking to open a coworking space?
To create a professional business environment and do not compromise on the quality of locations and services. It is all about: you get what you pay for. It is also important to know your clients’ businesses, so you can assist them in their endeavors.
How would you like people to remember Servcorp Shinagawa?
I would like people to remember our coworking space in Shinagawa as the most convenient location to meet people from all across the globe and from different types of industries.
