Hatch, Sri Lanka’s largest coworking space and accelerator, was recently named Best Coworking Space in the SAARC region at the Global Startup Awards in 2022. Hatch was also recognized as the Best Coworking Space globally at the same awards ceremony in 2020.

Bringing together a diverse, disruptive community of startups, scaleups, innovation teams, and international brands, the mission of Hatch is driven by the belief that collaboration is key to building a successful business. Since the space’s founding, Hatch’s global network of members and partners inspire, challenge, and work with each other across Sri Lanka and South Asia.

The 60,000 square feet coworking space is a playground for more than 800 members and over 115 startups that are giving life to new ideas. All of the workspaces at Hatch have been designed to help creativity flourish and allow people to be productive while delivering their best work.

The operator was recognized by the Global Startup Awards chiefly for its services, support, and resources to fast-growth startups, and for creating a culture and environment that fosters innovation and focuses on positively impacting the world.

“Winning these awards for the second consecutive year enables us to continue to position Sri Lanka and Hatch as an entrepreneurial hub globally and showcases the depth and range of our startup ecosystem,” said Brindha Selvadurai Gnanam, CEO and co-founder of Hatch.

More than just a coworking space, Hatch supports the startup ecosystem of Sri Lanka with curated programs, industry events, access to global mentorship, community networking, and innovative soft-landing support. Diving into many industries and driving innovation across the board, Hatch continues to design, collaborate, and execute programs in the FinTech, AgriTech, CleanTech, and EduTech sectors.

Hatch’s innovative, game-changing programs

Hatch has pioneered game-changing programs including HatchX, Sri Lanka’s first FinTech accelerator that was championed during the COVID-19 pandemic; She Loves Tech, the world’s largest accelerator platform for fostering women in the field of technology; and Green Energy Champion in partnership with the German Embassy to accelerate CleanTech startups. At present, Green Energy Champion has a 70% female cohort (when globally female representation in the CleanTech industry is less than 30%) and the program was awarded the Best Accelerator/Incubator title at the SAARC Global Startup Awards in 2022.

Hatch believes that investing in women is the smartest economic venture of today. When women grow, communities proposer and nations move forward. To further this purpose, Hatch has created a safe environment through their purpose-built incubator, accelerator, and fund that focuses on women entrepreneurs.

Already, Hatch has equipped over 140 female entrepreneurs in the past 24 months to build and scale sustainable businesses around the entire island. These businesses range from tourism, apparel, baby care, AgTech, and new foods.

“It has been amazing to work with the Hatch team, as they have been so approachable, helpful, and overall so invested in seeing us succeed and pushing us to be and do better in our business. The AccelerateHer program helped me gain valuable insight from Hatch’s expert panel of advisors, and more importantly to be able to use the funding provided to help scale the business and improve different functions,” said Tina, an alumna of AccelerateHer.

“When the U.S. began this partnership with Hatch to start the AccelerateHER program last year, we envisioned that women entrepreneurs would reap the benefits. Their success is now our success, and I can’t think of a better investment,” said Julie J. Chung, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka.

“Working with Hatch has been outstanding and incredible. Hatch has a long-standing reputation for providing high-quality representatives and program managers, as well as exceptional levels of external and internal supporting systems. The team I’ve worked with was one of the finest and most dynamic teams anyone wishes to work with,” Helena Ng, Head of Community for She Loves Tech.

A window into the Hatch community

The community remains a core value at Hatch, which led the operator to heighten their resources and extend additional support, especially during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Hatch supports its community beyond the call of duty, opening communication lines, easing tenure rates, and expanding methods of support, which resulted in 98% retention of the startups that utilize the space. Today, Hatch continues to operate at near 100% occupancy.

“Hatch is a fantastic community of inventors and entrepreneurs, and I’ve found that the environment supports the growth of my startup, Ifonix. The Hatch team has been really helpful with all of our needs, and they have always been courteous, polite, and exceeded our expectations,” said Umanda, a Hatch community member.

Hatch continues to be a global platform for local entrepreneurs and positions Sri Lanka as an entrepreneurial hub globally. Get in touch at [email protected]
